Taipan

Unit 1, Thornton House, Thornton Street, Newcastle, NE1 4AT

We went to Taipan during the weekend of Chinese New Year to celebrate my mam's birthday. It was a struggle to get a table. My sister Teresa couldn't get one so my dad tried and was able to eek one out of them.

There are two parts to Taipan. The part facing the main road is the normal restaurant, whilst the other part is there Express restaurant whatever that is.

Interally it is bright and airy and a welcome change to the normal decor of Stowell Street. There is a mezzanine floor which has more tables.

On their website it has a sushi section. Couldn't see anything like it when we were there, but again it could be all in the other restaurant bit.

The food was good. I liked their egg tarts which were a bit different as they seemed to have used salted duck egg yolk and not normal stuff making it a bit more savoury. The noodles and dim sum were fine.

Space seemed a bit tight though, unless it was because of Chinese New Year and the number of people rammed in.
