We stayed at this hotel as part of our weekend away celebrating our 10 years together.

Old Thorns Hotel, Gold and Country Club, Griggs Green, Liphook, Hmapshire, GU30 7PE.

The main attraction was not the golfing, as the hotel had a course attached, but for the Nippon Kan Japanese restaurant. Tel: 01428 724 555 for reservations.

I wanted to treat Angela to the Teppan Yaki dining where chefs prepare and cook the food right in front of you, whilst you sit around a table area with an open griddle in the centre. I first experienced this in Holland and it was the best meal I ever had.

The food was very good as to be expected and the beef was cooked to perfection. So tender. I don't think it was Kobe beef but they found something nearly as good, not that I have had Kobe beef before. There Japanese people having shabu-shabu there as well so that must be a good sign.

The other restaurant they have was OK but that night they had a wedding reception to cater for so the chef was running back and forth between the two events. Actually the music from that went on into the early hours which kept us up a bit.

The room we had was nice and had a huge bed.

The hotel is in Liphook which isn't that far to journey into London. We went into Portsmouth from there which is handy for shopping shopping and food. Gunwharf Quay does have a lot to offer.
