Paramount Chinese Restaurant

Bideford, Devon.

This place doesn't really come recommended. Four of us went there during the summer and managed to squeeze into a tight corner.

It was like that episode from Phoenix Nights when they hired some Chinese Chefs to cook for the club.

My friends asked for 3 waters to drink. What they got was 3 plastic sports bottles of water plonked onto the table. Nice. No glasses or ice. We had to ask for those.

The food was OK. Not brilliant. It was about £32 for 4 of us so I guess it was OK for the cost.

I went back again in the summer of 2007. This place is still like some time portal back to the 70/80s. Back to when my parents had a restaurant in Newton Aycliffe.

My friend had the spare ribs as a starter. Deep fried to a crisp and with red sauce poured over the top, and the icing on the cake was it was all served on an oval metal dish. That takes me back!

I can't remember what I exactly had for my main course but it was decent enough. Something like squid and black bean sauce. The rice was a bit naff though.

I thought I chose a decent white but that was a bit cutting as well. It was cheap though and did the job. Maybe I will just get a steak in Quigleys next time.
