Apartment Sol Mar
View from apartment

Me and Angela went to the Lagos on the Algrave at the beginning of August. Portugal can be pretty hot at that time and this was no different. Mid 30's during the day and there was talk of it being 40 degrees at one point.

I went there for a week of karate training and Angela came along to enjoy the sun and a break away from work. We had been for a holiday further East at the small fishing village of Alvor and we said we would like to come back to the Algarve at some point, so we did.

Luckily we had friends pick us up from the airport and it takes just under an hour to travel along the motorway to Lagos. We stayed in an apartment block called Sol Mar near Porto de Mos. The sea is only a short walk down a steep road, where in the mornings (we are talking 6.30am) we had to run to the top of a cliff and back down again. Ah well, we have to suffer for our training. Respect to Angela as she even got up early a few mornings and walked the route.

Dom Luis
Dom Luis bar/restaurant

With all the training we didn't really get a huge amount of time to get into town. We did make ourselves at home at Dom Luis bar/restaurant. The waiter looked like Dean Gaffney from Eastenders and he used to shake his head when he saw our lot heading into the bar. He knew he would be up till 3am, but that would be down to Peter and not me!

However, one night we did stay there till 3am and it was 4pm by the time we walked (staggered) back to the apartment, only to wake up for the morning run. I was a bit late that day but still made it, of sorts.

We did go to a different restaurant every night and will try to get their names down once I remember.

I think one restaurant on the high street was called Venis (Italian) that had the best lobster soup. Very tasty. The steak Portugese style seemed very basic, but it was a nice piece of steak.

We drove slightly east and up a hill on the last day, to a very popular restaurant with the locals and had a feast of sardines and pork. very cheap from what I can remember as well. The red wine as a big rough. It did get packed though. Just by the side of the main road but not sure what it is called.

The owner of Dom Luis, also owns the Millenium Jardin bar and restaurant on the main street in Lagos.
