Terroir tapas wine bar in Southbourne, Dorset.

Lots of things happening in Southbourne of late and more new establishments openings to come I hear.

James and the team from the Larder House have been working hard to refit one of the shops further down the Grove, opposite the petrol station, and turn it into a modern tapas drinking eaterie called Terroir Tapas. Now that Casa Carlos is at the top end of town, you can get traditional Spanish tapas, but at Terroir they have a modern take on small plates. Do not confuse this with Brits abroad kind of tapas.

Southbourne has been crying out for a "wine bar" where people can turn up and drink, and eat, without needing to book. Somewhere that isn't a pub.

There's also something different with respect to Terroir Tapas. There's a huge aim of sustainability and zero waste. Just check out the toilets and the fish tank to understand what's going on. They are also working with Conker Spirit on their gin and vodka offering.

With a wood fired oven and Ox Grill in place, they will surely cook up a storm for everyone. No printed menus (zero waste), so you have to keep an eye on the chalkboard and the website as it will change with availability.

Just don't be thinking it would be a good idea to pick one of the chillies from the growing pipes as a free snack on your way back from the toilets, which need a visit if you haven't done so already.

This definitely pushes the envelope in terms of what Southbourne can offer and is a unique addition to Bournemouth and Dorset itself.

One of my favourite dishes so far has been the Ox Cheek Ragu with Scallop, as well as their kimchi broth. The menu changes all the time though with seasonal produce from local suppliers and even their own allotment.

Over time Terroir Tapas has won many local and national awards. Here is James Fowler on Sky News following winning a CLASS Award.
